Buongiorno Giacomo,
Siamo al via di una stagione nuova e il tuo team si presenterà agli internazionali d’Italia con grosse novità, una su tutte l’arrivo di Jeffrey Herlings, come è l’aria che si respira nel team?
“Sì direi che nel team c’è quella eccitazione che non vedevo da diversi anni, l’arrivo di Herlings e Vialle ha dato a tutti una nuova energia e quella sensazione di attesa e fermento che si erano un po’ assopiti. Inoltre il loro arrivo ha decisamente dato una spinta verso l’alto anche a Fernández e Lata che vorranno essere anche loro protagonisti di questa stagione. C’è una bella atmosfera e tanta voglia di fare bene. Piloti come Jeffrey Herlings ti fanno alzare ancora di più l’asticella, 112 GP vinti in carriera, nessuno come lui e vogliamo provare a fargli migliorare ancora questo record”.
Good morning Giacomo
We are at the start of a new season, and your team will be presenting itself at “Internazionali d’Italia” with some big news, one of which is the arrival of Jeffrey Herlings. What is the atmosphere like in the team?
“Yes, I would say that there is an excitement in the team that I haven’t seen for several years. The arrival of Herlings and Vialle has given everyone new energy and that feeling of anticipation and excitement that had faded a little. Their arrival has also given Fernández and Lata a boost, as they too want to be protagonists this season. There’s a great atmosphere and a real desire to do well. Riders like Jeffrey Herlings raise the bar even higher. With 112 GP wins in his career, no one else comes close, and we want to try to help him improve that record even further.”
Anni ai vertici del mondiale motocross, tanti successi, ma non è sempre facile gestire una squadra a questi livelli, dove vincere è l’unico obiettivo, come si coordina tutto questo?
“Un Team come il nostro deve partire sempre con l’obiettivo di vincere, purtroppo qualche volta ci si mettono di mezzo gli infortuni che non ci consentono di arrivare al risultato finale. Tutto viene pensato e organizzato al massimo solo con l’idea di portare a Honda un nuovo titolo e la filosofia dei nuovi piloti è solo quella, conta solo vincere, ma non deve essere assolutamente considerata presunzione ma l’unico obiettivo e scopo di chi lavora per questo grande brand.”
Years at the top of the motocross world championship, many successes, but it’s not always easy to manage a team at this level, where winning is the only goal. How do you coordinate all this?
“A team like ours must always start with the goal of winning. Unfortunately, sometimes injuries get in the way and prevent us from achieving the final result. Everything is planned and organized to the maximum with the sole idea of bringing Honda a new title, and the philosophy of the new riders is just that: only winning counts. But this should not be considered presumption; it is simply the sole goal and purpose of those who work for this great brand.”
Siete il team di riferimento della Honda HRC nel motocross, un “simbolo” più che un marchio che è nel cuore di tanti appassionati e sappiamo che a portarti in questo mondo è stata soprattutto la passione, ma cosa si prova ad essere a capo di questa squadra e con questi colori?
“Rappresentare il reparto corse più potente al mondo (F1, MotoGP, SBK, Rally e Trial) è soprattutto un onore che spero di continuare a meritare per tanti anni a venire. Solo chi ha vissuto gli anni 80 di HRC nel Motocross riesce ad immaginare cosa significhi questo logo e io ho avuto la fortuna di esserci da appassionato in quel periodo e di ammirare quelle moto meravigliose che realizzavano, un sogno e un grande privilegio ora essere parte della loro organizzazione.”
You are Honda HRC’s flagship motocross team, a “symbol” rather than a brand that is close to the hearts of many fans. We know that it was passion above all else that brought you into this world, but how does it feel to be at the helm of this team and wear these colors?
“Representing the most powerful racing department in the world (F1, MotoGP, SBK, Rally, and Trial) is above all an honor that I hope to continue to deserve for many years to come. Only those who experienced the 1980s with HRC in Motocross can imagine what this logo means, and I was lucky enough to be there as a fan during that period and to admire those wonderful bikes they made. It is a dream and a great privilege to now be part of their organization.”
“HRC – Honda Racing Corporation” è sinonimo di prototipi, di test e innovazione, parti studiate nelle competizioni che poi si vedranno sulle moto di serie negli anni successivi, novità e tanto di più, come è la vostra Honda 2026 che scenderà in pista, cosa ci puoi dire?
“La nostra CRF è ancora un prototipo, un progetto tutto da sviluppare e con un potenziale enorme che verrà poi trasferito sulle moto dei clienti. In Ottobre sono stato in HRC a Tokyo e ho visitato il reparto ricerca e sviluppo e c’erano 35 ingegneri che lavoravano su questo progetto di CRF, é incredibile vedere tutta la tecnologia che ruota attorno allo sviluppo di un CRF e il brain storm di questi ingegneri riuniti per capire dove e come migliorarla. Penso che vedremo vari step di sviluppo durante la stagione nelle mani dei nostri tre piloti MXGP.”
“HRC – Honda Racing Corporation” is synonymous with prototypes, testing, and innovation, parts designed in competition that will then be seen on production bikes in subsequent years, new features, and much more, such as your Honda 2026 that will take to the track. What can you tell us about it?
“Our CRF is still a prototype, a project that needs to be developed and has enormous potential that will then be transferred to customers’ motorcycles. In October, I was at HRC in Tokyo and visited the research and development department, where there were 35 engineers working on this CRF project. It’s incredible to see all the technology that goes into developing a CRF and the brainstorming of these engineers coming together to figure out where and how to improve it. I think we’ll see various stages of development during the season in the hands of our three MXGP riders.”
Hai sempre un occhio verso il futuro e non sei mai fermo, ma guardando a qualche anno fa e all’evoluzione dell’agonismo in questo sport, come vedi il motocross oggi, soprattutto nel campionato del mondo?
“Il nostro è sicuramente il campionato MX più competitivo al mondo, sono coinvolte tantissime case ufficiali e abbiamo i migliori piloti al mondo e il Motocross delle Nazioni ne è la conferma, dovremmo solo cercare di riempire di più i cancelletti e arrivare sempre a 40 piloti, questo è l’unico limite attuale del nostro sistema. Probabilmente andrebbe rivista anche la preparazione delle piste che troppo spesso risultano in una mono traiettoria che talvolta rende meno spettacolari le gare. Per le case è però una grande imprescindibile vetrina internazionale.”
You always have an eye on the future and never stand still, but looking back a few years and at the evolution of competition in this sport, how do you see motocross today, especially in the world championship?
“Ours is definitely the most competitive MX championship in the world. There are lots of official manufacturers involved, and we have the best riders in the world, as confirmed by the Motocross of Nations. We just need to try to fill the starting gates more and always have 40 riders. That’s the only current limitation of our system. The preparation of the tracks should probably also be reviewed, as too often they result in a single trajectory, which sometimes makes the races less spectacular. For the manufacturers, however, it is a great and essential international showcase.”
Siamo al via degli Internazionali d’Italia 2026 e la tua squadra è sempre presente, perché sono così importanti queste manifestazioni ad inizio anno?
“Per noi gli Internazionali d’Italia sono sempre stati le gare fondamentali per provare tutto e tutti prima del mondiale, sempre su piste molto belle e nelle date giuste per organizzare prima i tests e poi il primo GP, quindi non possiamo mancare anche se tutti gli anni altri organizzatori ci chiedono di partecipare alle loro gare ma per noi queste due in Italia hanno sempre la precedenza“.
We are at the start of the 2026 Italian Internationals and your team is always there. Why are these events so important at the beginning of the year?
“For us, the Italian Internationals have always been the key races for testing everything and everyone before the world championship, always on very nice tracks and at the right dates to organize the tests first and then the first GP, so we can’t miss them, even though every year other organizers ask us to participate in their races, but for us, these two in Italy always take precedence.”
