Buongiorno Paolo, sappiamo che sei appena tornato dagli USA dove Ducati ha esordito nel Supercross, come è partita questa avventura oltre oceano? Come hai visto il movimento americano?
In effetti sono appena rientrato in Italia, in tempo per la gara di Alghero, dopo tre settimane negli USA per seguire da vicino l’esordio della Desmo450 MX nel Campionato AMA Supercross. Tutti gli appassionati conoscono l’altissimo livello di competitività delle Case, dei team e dei piloti presenti in SX e quindi siamo estremamente soddisfatti delle prestazioni della nostra moto e del lavoro del team Troy Lee Designs e di Dylan Ferrandis. Nel primo round di Anaheim1, al nostro esordio in assoluto in questa serie, Justin Barcia e Dylan Ferrandis hanno chiuso al terzo e quarto posto la Heat 1, dimostrando il valore del pacchetto moto-pilota. Purtroppo, il bruttissimo incidente di Barcia nel Main Event, oltre a preoccuparci molto (ma per fortuna le conseguenze non sono state troppo gravi), ha anche eliminato un possibile protagonista dalle gare successive. In ogni caso, il nono posto di Ferrandis, ripetuto a San Diego, e il suo undicesimo posto a Anaheim2 sono risultati che ci fanno ben sperare per il prosieguo del Campionato.
We know you’ve just returned from the USA where Ducati made its Supercross debut. How did this overseas adventure start? What did you think of the American scene?
I actually just returned to Italy, in time for the race in Alghero, after three weeks in the US to closely follow the debut of the Desmo450 MX in the AMA Supercross Championship. All fans are aware of the extremely high level of competitiveness of the manufacturers, teams, and riders in SX, so we are extremely satisfied with the performance of our bike and the work of the Troy Lee Designs team and Dylan Ferrandis. In the first round at Anaheim 1, our debut in this series, Justin Barcia and Dylan Ferrandis finished third and fourth in Heat 1, demonstrating the value of the bike-rider package. Unfortunately, Barcia’s nasty crash in the Main Event, in addition to worrying us greatly (but fortunately the consequences were not too serious), also eliminated a possible contender from subsequent races. In any case, Ferrandis’ ninth place finish, repeated in San Diego, and his eleventh place finish in Anaheim 2 are results that give us hope for the rest of the Championship.
Il progetto Ducati motocross è seguito da te fin dal suo esordio e direi che in pochi anni avete fatto passi da gigante, a che punto siamo?
Pensiamo di aver fatto un buon lavoro ma naturalmente sappiamo di dover ancora migliorare. Quest’anno ci presentiamo al via del mondiale con il nuovo team VMR Promotion in MXGP e tre ottimi piloti, ed esordiremo il MX2 e EMX250 con il team Beddini e due giovani piloti italiani. Chiaramente l’obiettivo è quello di lottare sempre per la top five in MXGP e fare esperienza e sviluppare la nuova Desmo250 MX in MX2.
You have been involved in the Ducati motocross project since its inception, and I would say that you have made great strides in just a few years. Where are we now?
We think we have done a good job, but of course we know we still have room for improvement. This year, we are entering the world championship with the new VMR Promotion team in MXGP and three excellent riders, and we will be making our debut in MX2 and EMX250 with the Beddini team and two young Italian riders. Clearly, the goal is to always fight for the top five in MXGP and to gain experience and develop the new Desmo250 MX in MX2.
Parte una nuova stagione con tante aspettative per tutte le squadre, gli Internazionali d’Italia vedono Ducati schierarsi dietro al cancello di partenza con quali obiettivi e dal punto di vista tecnico e di piloti quali sono le novità di questo ‘26?
In parte ho già risposto prima, ma è importante sottolineare che ad Alghero saremo presenti con tutti i nostri 5 piloti 2026: Bonacorsi, Seewer e Vlaanderen in 450 e Zanchi e Mancini in 250.
A new season is starting with high expectations for all teams. At the Italian Internationals, Ducati is lining up at the starting gate with what objectives? From a technical and rider perspective, what’s new for 2026?
I have already answered this in part, but it is important to emphasize that we will be present in Alghero with all five of our 2026 riders: Bonacorsi, Seewer, and Vlaanderen in 450, and Zanchi and Mancini in 250.
La tifoseria Ducati è fondamentale per tutto il movimento del motociclismo, il motocross è un mercato importante per le aziende, come lo vedi oggi e cosa pensi del futuro dell’MX?
Ducati ha deciso di impegnarsi nell’off-road con l’obiettivo di allargare la base della sua clientela avvicinando un target più giovane, che prima non trovava nella nostra gamma dei modelli adatti a soddisfare la loro passione per il fuoristrada. Il mercato è in un momento difficile per tutte le case, ma penso che grazie alle caratteristiche uniche dei nostri prodotti il successo commerciale non mancherà. Da questo punto di vista i numeri di vendita della Desmo450 MX sono molto confortanti e in linea con i nostri obiettivi.
Ducati fans are fundamental to the entire motorcycling movement. Motocross is an important market for companies. How do you see it today, and what do you think about the future of MX?
Ducati has decided to commit to off-road racing with the aim of expanding its customer base by attracting a younger target audience, which previously could not find models in our range that satisfied their passion for off-road riding. The market is going through a difficult period for all manufacturers, but I think that thanks to the unique characteristics of our products, commercial success is assured. From this point of view, the sales figures for the Desmo450 MX are very encouraging and in line with our objectives.
